TeachingEnglish is produced by the British Council with content and editorial support from the British Broadcasting Corporation. Both organisations receive funding from the UK government for their work in promoting English, supporting English language teaching (ELT) and providing information and access to ELT products, services and expertise from the UK. All teaching material on the site is free to access.
As part of a pilot project, the site also features a variety of teaching materials produced by selected UK publishers.
Our purpose
We have designed this site to act in four ways:
as a theoretical and historical archive: where you can read about teaching methodology, current practice and issues in ELT
as a practical resource: for materials, activities and ideas for your teaching
as a forum: to help you, as teachers of English, to discuss your teaching, exchange ideas and share materials
as an information source: for professional development and training as well as an access point for consultancy services to implement educational policy reform.
Our content
The site is divided into four main sections which mirror the purposes described above:
THINK: where you can find teachers’ articles on different aspects of teaching, from classroom practice to learning theory
TRY: where you can find lesson plans, quizzes, ideas for activities and other materials which you can download to use in class
TALK: where you can keep you own personal blog, join discussion forums and form groups around particular areas of interest
TRANSFORM: where teachers can get help and advice on their professional development (training, qualifications, personal development, specialist areas, etc) and policy makers can find information about the products and consultancy services that the British Council can offer from the ELT constituency in the UK.
The materials on this site are designed for non-native speaker teachers of English working predominantly in secondary education in state schools around the world. However, we have made a wide variety of material available and we trust it will also be of interest to teachers of all age groups and working in other kinds of teaching institutions.
TeachingEnglish also allows users to comment on content across the site. Views expressed by our users are theirs and do not necessarily reflect the views of the British Council or the BBC.
BritLit was originally established in Portugal to help teachers in secondary schools to work effectively with the extended reading texts (short stories) in the national curriculum. Since then it has become a global resource and offers access to texts and supporting material for the whole school range of English language teaching.
The stories and poems featured are mostly chosen because of their relevance to the teaching programmes in many countries as well as the interest likely to be stimulated in young people. The majority of the stories and poems are from contemporary writers. This allows a parallel programme of author visits to schools across the world to take place. All the writers featured have a strong connection with the UK.
Some of the materials are written by professional materials writers and some are written by teams of teachers of English who have attended NILE training courses in Norwich, UK, with this purpose in mind. All the ‘kits’ are edited by Fitch O’Connell, Claudia Ferradas and/or Alan Pulverness.
The resources are called ‘kits’ because they are designed to be chosen from rather than used in their entirety – teachers build their own lessons from the activities on offer. The wide range of materials on offer allows mixed ability teaching to become a reality, as is the preference for including materials where the task can be easily graded.
Teachers interested in considering some of the further pedagogical implications of using short stories in the BritLit way can downlaod and read Literary Farmers (pdf).
The staff at Tune Into English have been combining their passion for music and teaching since entering the world of ELT.
Our students look forward to being rewarded at the end of each lesson with their favourite song, and agree it is the most motivating point of the lesson.
Tune into English was created by Fergal Kavanagh . He is both a Teacher Trainer and a one-time Radio DJ, and has taught in the Scuola Superiore and at the British Council and the University “L’Orientale” in Napoli, also collaborating with the Regione Campania. He has co-written a coursebook for the Italian, Spanish and Greek lower secondary school and conducted teacher training sessions throughout Italy, as well as in Germany, Spain, Turkey, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Ireland.
In November 2005 he first presented the Tune Into English Roadshow, and since then has encouraged tens of thousands of students in five countries to listen more closely to the language used in songs.
While Tune Into English is his main activity, Fergal also works in many different fields. He regularly contributes to guide books on Naples and the surrounding area, has organised a pizza festival in Ireland and an Italian tour for Irish singer-songwriter Marc Carroll. He has collaborated in film production, and his voice features on many more productions. He continues to occasionally DJ in local clubs and at private events.

A chef friend of mine once told me the secret to good cooking. According to him, success lies in obtaining excellent ingredients.
It all seems so simple really. And as a language teacher I can relate to this. We can’t overestimate the importance of the ingredients that we select for the classroom – that is the materials.
Materials should inspire teachers and engage students. They should be provoking (without necessarily being provocative although that can be good). They should arouse curiosity and get heads thinking and language emerging. During the last few years, the modern teacher has been given access to an explosion in good ingredients to take into the classroom.
Take Western Spaghetti for example – a great animation by filmmaker PES. During this one and a half minute clip, we watch a series of bizarre household objects – a ball of wool, a Rubik’s cube, a handful of rubber bands – being transformed into a delicious looking plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce.
The clip is everything we would want to get students on our side. But what do we do with it? Well, that is whereLessonstream comes in. Lessonstream is a selection of lesson plans – or rather, recipes – which serve to demonstrate how teachers can make use of such materials.
Of course, good chefs don’t stick rigidly to recipes. They adapt them. And I would never expect a teacher to use one of my lesson plans exactly how I have written it.
For that reason, the site uses a Creative Commons license. That is what the logo in the bottom right hand side of the screen is all about. What this means is that teachers have permission to remix, mash and share the content on my site for non-commercial purposes.
Have fun!
Jamie 🙂

the round is an independent collective of creative individuals in English language teaching.
It was founded by Lindsay Clandfield and Luke Meddings in spring 2011 and arose from a series of conversations about bridging the gap between blogs and books – and about the difficulty of placing innovative, niche or critical materials with the big ELT publishers.
Our mission is threefold:
to provide great material for educators (fairly priced and readily accessible)
to give a fair deal to authors (who sell and retain the copyright on their own work)
to be a learning environment (where we share expertise and ideas)
The website, designed and developed by Mark Bain, is a shared space for marketing products by round authors and disseminating round news and ideas.
Serbian City Club is a London-based independent and non-political organisation established to promote the interests of Serbian professionals. Its aim is to provide a networking platform for the professionals looking to pursue a career in the City of London and more recently those who are looking to return to Serbia.
Thanks to our growing group of members, we support and encourage all professionals, whatever their origin or social status, to enter into the heart of the leading European and world’s business community. Anyone who is interested in becoming a member of our network is more than welcome to join the Serbian City Club and help us by taking part in our activities.
Serbian City Club was founded in the late 1990’s by a few enthusiastic Serb immigrants that were working in London’s financial institutions. Their idea was to bring to life an informal club that would gather young Serbian professionals that lived and worked in the UK. However, since 2004, our numbers have steadily increased and today the Club is more than 1600 strong. Our members are mainly London-based and work in all walks of professional life as scientists, doctors, bankers, engineers, lecturers, civil servants, etc. in renowned British and global institutions. Our typical Club member is characterized by a high level of education and cultural awareness which tied with their linguistic skills ensures their allows them seamless integration into British society. Whilst retaining strong links with their families and friends in Serbia, with a view of transferring their knowledge, skills and experience, they strengthen Serbia’s European identity and its key role in the Balkans. With this in mind, we have recently started a project of ‘brain drain reversal’ through which we are enabling Serbian professionals to return to Serbia.
The Club organizes networking events in London on a monthly basis thus enabling continued contact amongst the existing members and an opportunity to welcome new ones
